Scaleform Announces Exclusive Agreement with Fontworks to Enable
Vector Graphic Fonts for Japanese Game Developers

Delivers exclusive advantage to Fontworks LETS customers using Scaleform GFx

GREENBELT, MD and FUKUOKA, JAPAN, January 14, 2009: Scaleform Corporation and Fontworks Incorporated today announced an agreement to co-market the scalable vector graphic form of Fontworks fonts for use exclusively with the Scaleform® GFx™ high-performance rich media user interface (UI) and vector graphics engine for console and PC game developers. This agreement benefits Japanese video game developers and publishers by advancing font quality and workflow, and offers a richer, more immersive, and differentiated end user gaming experience. It applies to games sold worldwide.

In Scaleform GFx the vector graphics rendering process is accelerated by the latest hardware graphics to display the vector fonts. Scaleform's cutting-edge EdgeAA anti-aliasing technology and high-quality scalable rendering enable precision outline with no degradation of font typeface integrity. Scalable to any size on the video game screen and fully independent from its resolution, vector fonts offer competitive advantage when embracing exciting trends such as HD gaming.

"Our joint initiative with Scaleform, the leading solution for video game user interface design, enables Japanese customers to use their existing processes while augmenting their capabilities," said Fumikazu Matsuyuki, CEO of Fontworks Incorporated. "It is our pleasure and objective to offer the best solutions and more convenience for video games developers and publishers."

"We are honored to align ourselves with Fontworks, the industry leader for fonts in the Japanese game industry," said Brendan Iribe, president and CEO of Scaleform Corporation. "This agreement demonstrates both companies' strong commitment to not only meet customer requirements but advance the craft of game development for Japanese publishers."

To date, Fontworks has licensed its OpenType fonts under its Leading Edge Type Solution (LETS) license program to a range of video game developers and publishers in Japan. These licenses have been restricted regarding use of fonts in video game titles: OpenType fonts must be handled as images in bitmap format. This has posed a serious drawback to developers and creators for game screen font presentation because they were forced to choose between two compromised methods: one requiring a larger memory footprint to have different sized font sets in the game, or the second, enabling lower memory use but resulting in degraded font presentation onscreen by means of stretch/shrink.

Under the new agreement between Scaleform and Fontworks, Japanese developers and publishers can now use Fontworks LETS fonts in vector font format with Scaleform GFx, at no additional fee to any party, provided that the vector fonts are used in the video game UI for such elements as text dialogs and messages. This offer applies to the current and future Fontworks LETS program for licensees developing Scaleform GFx enabled video game titles.
